Percy Jackson & The Olympians Books Question

Why is it "The Big Three" instead of "The Big Six"?

I've only read the first two books so far, just so you know. Well, I also happen to have a small background on Greek Mythology, and I know for a fact that Kronos is supposed to have 6 children, not three. His sons were Poseidon, Zeus and Hades, but he also had three daughters: Hera, Demeter and Hestia. Is there a specific reason that only the males are the powerful ones? (Sorry, I really like the books, but sexism really annoys me, and I was hoping there may be an actual reason besides "the author is sexist". Is there one?)

the brothers were just more powerful, i guess. the sad truth was that back in times where people believed in this stuff (not that i don't) men were considered 'better'. and don't go blaming this on Rick Riordan or the author of those mythology books, they're just stating fact.

i just thought of this, so i'm editing it in. Hera, Demeter and Hestia were goddesses of marriage, agriculture, and the hearth. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades were gods of the sky, the sea, and the Underworld. these just seem more influential, so i guess they're more powerful.

That is a good point. It must be hard to take something that was already sexist and turn it into a work that doesn't reflect that. Good point. He probably isn't sexist (I mean, Annabeth, Thalia, Zoe... not very anti-feminist. XD) it's probably just the mythology. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Wow, I just said that is isn't sexist. I said the myths themselves are sexist. I JUST said that the books are not sexist. Please read my comments before you reply to them, thanks.

Well... women weren't given the chance to show any power, but that's okay. I see what you mean. Thanks for your answer :)

no the Auther is not sexist. it was like that already and that is how the greek myhtology goes. Zeus is the youngest and was hidden from his father, and he was the one to save his brothers AND sisters, so that was why he is the head God. Zeus made Kronos throw up his children and the Zues, Poseidon and Hades werethe ones to cutt Kronos up in little pieces and threw him in the underworld. so, because the three was the one to dispose of Kronos they're called the big Three.

Good point :) Thank you :) (By the way, I wasn't actually trying to say that the author is sexist, I was just asking about that part of the book, it seemed a little bit so... but you're right. Rick can't change the mythology that's already there. He isn't really sexist. There is a lot of feminism. It was just that one thing. Thank you :D) Also, good point, percyandpotter! :D

sorry to say but sexism is the main reason for only zeus, posiden, and hades to be labled as the most powerful gods because in ancient times males were seen as more dominant and powerful than females
