Marlene invited Elizabeth for a walk through Central Park. Not wanting to be rude, Elizabeth accepted.
“So what was it like? Being a nurse for all those people must’ve been hard work.”
“Yeah, it got difficult sometimes. Especially when we had to break the news to the family when a loved one passed on.”
“I can imagine. So you’ve never been married then?” Elizabeth looked sideways at her for a moment, knowing she had to lie.
“Nope. Always been single.”
“Well that’s hard to believe, you seem like such a wonderful woman. I’m surprised no one’s snatched you up yet!”
“I guess I just haven’t found that special someone.”
“What about Kowalski? It seems like you two are getting pretty serious.” Marlene nudged Elizabeth with her elbow. Elizabeth smiled shyly. “Come on! I’m intrigued! What’s goin’ on between you two? I know you two went out on the terrace last night…”
“Well, nothing much happened…”
“Did he…kiss you!?” Marlene emphasized the word ‘kiss’ by nudging her again. Elizabeth went bright pink and looked down. “He did didn’t he!?” Elizabeth felt like a tomato. She laughed embarrassingly and playfully pushed Marlene. Marlene laughed. “I’m sorry, I’m just so happy for you two! Kowalski’s a really nice guy.”
Elizabeth looked down. “I know.” She looked at the street. A car was parked on the side of the road. A man in casual clothing and sunglasses was leaning against it watching them.
“Elizabeth?” Elizabeth hadn’t realized she’d stopped walking. She looked at Marlene with a start. “Is something wrong?”
“No! I mean…I remembered that I left my jacket at the diner. I’m sorry.” Marlene eyed her suspiciously. “Are you sure there isn’t anything wrong? You know you can tell me.”
“I’m fine. Thanks for the concern though.” Elizabeth said smiling. She glanced back at the car…that is…where she expected the car still was. It was gone, along with the man. “Um…Marlene, why don’t we go back to the apartment building?”
“Okay.” They turned and began walking back. Elizabeth looked all around her, but couldn’t find the car anywhere.

(Elizabeth’s POV)
There’s a difference between being told you’ll be watched, feeling like you’re being watched, and knowing you’re being watched. I don’t know how much more paranoid I can get. I jump at closing doors, and I’ve found myself checking my surroundings 24/7. Well, I’m smarter than Hans thinks. I’m about to take a chance. If this guy really is following me, I’m gonna stop it.
I suppose this experience has caused me to lose my mind because I’m walking down 5th Avenue on my own. I’m very observant of my surroundings. That man walking behind me doesn’t think I know he’s following me. I pretend like my cell is vibrating and turn into an alley, even saying a fake ‘Hello’. He walked about halfway past the alley and stopped and looked around innocently. I took three steps toward him, grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him into the alley. The next thing he knew, I had him pinned to the wall.
“Who are you!? Did he send you?!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“That’s a lie! He sent you didn’t he!?”
For a second he looked at me blankly…then pushed me off of him. He tried to run but I’d tripped him. He plummeted to the ground and I was on top of him and pinned him down. I guess this is where a black belt in karate comes in handy. Maybe I was going a little too far with this…but I was sick and tired of watchin’ my back everywhere I went. “Stop following me!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about! Let me go!”
Well, maybe he was telling the truth. I looked hard into his eyes, trying to look for signs of a lie. When I found none, I grunted in ager and stood up. I offered my hand to help him to his feet. Big mistake.
The next thing I knew I was on the ground and he was on top of me.
“Hans was right, you’ll believe anything.”
“What are you talking about?! Get off of me!” I grabbed his shirt and rolled over on top of him and punched him in the face to let him know I meant business.
“If I ever see you following me again, I will kill you!” Of course that was a bluff; I can barely stand doing what I’m doing right now. My heart is pounding, and not from fighting. “And you can tell Hans that I can do what I need to do just fine without one of his rats following my every move.” I got up and went out of the alley. That’s when I realized my head was throbbing. I reached up and touched my temple. When I looked at my fingers, there was blood. It must’ve happened when I was taken to the ground.
(No one’s POV)
Once Elizabeth made it back to her apartment, she went into the bathroom and cleaned her wound, and applied a bandage. Great. How on Earth am I going to explain this? She thought. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. She thought up a lie as she approached the door. When she answered, she was surprised to see who stood before her.
“Skipper? What are you doing here?”
“We need to talk.” He…didn’t look too happy…which worried Elizabeth. She made a gesture to invite him in. He walked past her and she shut the door behind them.
Suddenly Elizabeth could feel the dagger tucked in her boot pressing against her leg. Is this really the time? Skipper turned around to face her. It seemed that he wasn’t sure where to start.
“What happened to your forehead?” He asked the question as if he already knew the answer. Elizabeth’s heart began to pound.
“I tripped and bumped my head.”
Skipper looked down as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Do you make a living out of lying? Because you’re really good at it.”
Elizabeth gulped slightly. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb with me. For your information I was out this morning. I saw you in that alley. I decided that my decision to stop digging into your past was a mistake. So I dug deeper. You didn’t even exist before eight years ago. So I did a facial recognition. You’re real name is Amanda Taylor. You left Denmark eight years ago and were never heard from again. And worse than that you were married to my arch enemy!” Elizabeth didn’t know what to say. She stood speechless. “So, my question is…why are you here?” Well, how exactly do I answer that? Elizabeth thought. She acted without thinking. She reached down and ripped the dagger from her boot and flung herself at him. He caught her arm and she kneed him in the stomach.
He doubled over, but only for a second, but he did let go of her arm. She turned 360 on her heel and kicked him in the back. He stumbled forward and she pulled him back by the scruff of the neck. Now he was angry.
She swung the dagger toward his face but once again he grabbed her arm. “So that’s what you’re here for?! Hans told you to kill me!?” She didn’t answer. She turned on her heel for another kick, but he grabbed her leg and pushed her to the ground. When she landed, the dagger flew out of her hand and slid next to the end table. She and Skipper looked at the dagger, then at each other. “You don’t have to do this. I don’t know what Hans said to you, but I’m not the enemy here.” He extended his hand to help her up. Elizabeth looked at it for a moment, then took it. Once he’d helped her up…Elizabeth used her other arm to push Skipper to the ground. She leapt to the ground and almost reached the dagger. She tried to use her arms to pull herself closer to it, but Skipper pulled her away, flipped her on her back and pinned her down. “Why are you so determined to kill me?! What have I ever done to you?! Or do you just love Hans so much you’d kill and innocent man for him?!”
Those words hurt Elizabeth; they mad her angry. She spat in his face and bit his arm. Skipper cried out in pain and Elizabeth was able to push Skipper off of herself. She pushed herself forward and grabbed the dagger. Skipper was almost on his feet when Elizabeth kicked him in the chest, landing him on his back. She got on top of him and held up the dagger, and Skipper’s life flashed before his eyes.
