He remembered his dad's words along with Private's "I will send a sign to trigger a plan in your mind," and "I thought you were dead". Images appeared in his mind. How unsuspecting the dog was when he attacked after his plan before. The whole ignorant staff of this place was the dog. All he had to do to defeat them was putting together a fake death. By that they'd throw his "corpse" in the trash. From the dump truck he'd jump out and make his way to the zoo. There he would rally up all the animals to save his boys and the other penguins. From there they would all escape even the girl. All the pieces worked together like a puzzle. But how could he do that it Private, again. Private would have to know what he was doing. Another situation was how he would "die". He still looked well-fed. It couldn't look like he starved. His thoughts went back to Private suddenly. It was like a force he couldn't control. His mind and heart ached alike when he thought of Private's anger and rage. His eyes when they fought yesterday, secretly broke his heart. Maybe, he hated to think it, but the only way was having Private have a "stage fight" with him. It might work. It would have to, for it was all he had.
S: "Thank you, dad."
Skipper whispered.
P: "I'm sorry, what did you say?"
S: "I have a plan, but I'm going to need your help and trust."
Private nodded solemnly.
Rico's stomach moaned it had been a month since he had last eaten.
M: "Looks like we're both hungry."
R: "Uh, whatcha gonna do?'
M: "I'm glad I met you. You make me feel safe."
R: "Yeah, yeah, yeah,"
Somedays it seemed that Max was the only thing that kept him sane. Well, the thread of sanity he had left. He didn't know what he'd do without him.
Skipper sighed. What did his father mean? Warn him about Private. Maybe, he did want to evenge his dad afterall. But that wasn't like him.
S: "So when the guards come to choose one of us to fight, we have a fake fight. That is after the dog leaves his side! And I stress, the: after! You will pretend ...,"
P: "Yes, Skippah?"
With all his strength, Skipper let go of his paranoid thoughts.
S: "You will pretend to kill me. I'll do exactly what I did in the arena. Play dead, until they take out the trash, that I'll hopefully be in if the operation is a sucess. From there I will rally up the neighbors at the home front. We will attack and rescue every penguin. All you have to do for me after the fight is please, please, stay safe."
P: "I promise, I will."
S: "Ata boy, Private."
P: "Are we ready?"
The door creaked open.
S: "Now!"
There was no turning back, now. They raced at the door side by side. Once they got there they hid behind a few penguins.
P: "Now?"
S: "No, not yet."
After the dog left the man's side, Private tackled Skipper. They landed at the man's feet.
M: "Hey, break it up!"
He kicked them into the crowd. Private clenched Skipper's throat, and glared at him. What was he thinking? Maybe his dad was right, Private might be trying to actually kill him. He closed is eyes and Private let go. He slowed his breathing and the guard picked him up in one hand.
M: "Whoa! I can't believe this."
The man headed off. Private stood there horrified if he had actually hurt his Skipper. Private had to fend for himself now. Just then the man came back. Private turned to make a break for it, but it was no use. The man grasped him. Private knew what was coming next. He was heading to the arena.
Rico was playing "peak-a-boo" with Max when the door opened. Two men stood side by side in the doorway.
M1: "So we get a bigger opponet for number 78936?"
M2: "Are you kidding? First, we get one that would be its level. Then, if it defeats the rival, we give him a bigger challenger."
R: "78936?"
M: "Do you know him or her?"
M1: "What about that little guy?"
The man pointed to Max. Just then, Rico stepped shielding Max from the man.
M2: "Always have to do it the hard way, don't we."
A whip lashed Rico, but he still stood his ground. The men groaned in infuriation and one kicked Rico. The kick sent him to the ground. By the time he trudged to his feet, they had already got a hold of Max. Rico bit the man's leg.
M: "Don't let them take me, Rico!"
The man kicked Rico again, but this time Rico landed in front of the opposite wall. He lied down helplessly and watched Max get taken away from him. All his purpose and sanity seemed to vanish.
Nicole and Kowalski sat in silence. Their moment of quietness was made brief, when two men busted through the door. They turned on a TV in the corner of the room and sat down.
M1: "Did you hear how number 78936 killed 78937?"
M2: "Yeah, but I don't believe it."
K: "Private k-killed Skipper!"
N: "No, maybe it's the wrong number. I mean, Private would never do that, right?"
K: "Do you think they were both put in the arena?"
N: "I don't know, but how could Private beat Skipper?"
K: "Skipper couldn't kill Private. What if he let him win?"
N: "Kowalski, I'm so sorry."
K: "The team's drifting apart."
N: "I can promise you that I'll never drift away from you."
K: "What?"
N: "I like you, Kowalski."
Before he could respond she kissed him.
