Season 5?

I just...don't get it.
I mean, yes, they were away from each other for about four months, but on every other relationship on the show, there's still a lot of angst and awkwardness.
We got, like, two seconds of awkwardness, and then they were suddenly like the best of friends.
Joey encouraged Pacey and Audrey to go out.
Pacey listened to Joey talk about Dawson.
I mean, their breakup was particularly bad.
Can someone explain it to me, please?
