they come from devil fruit trees that are in random places around the world. So far, that's all we know about where evil fruit come from.

Sorry, I was wrong. Devil fruits do NOT come from trees. When a Devil Fruit user dies, the essence of the Devil fruit's power travels into the nearest fruit of it's kind and that fruit then becomes a Devil fruit, complete with a swirly pattern and a curly stem.
