Once Upon A Time Question

Why does everyone love Regina so much?

She seems to be an extremely popular character. I mean, she's fine and her character is interesting, but I definitely prefer other characters. I think I'd like her better if she'd turn back to being good.

o start of I'd like to say Lana Parrilla plays her so well. Lana is the reason I started to love her. I have seen so many portrayals of the evil queen but no one has given her as much depth or character as Lana. Even if a person doesn't like Gina they could at least admit Lana does a real good job; her eyes are very expressive, you can tell exactly what Queenie feels jut by looking at them. She also has this ability to change her voice tone according to whom she is portraying, Gina or Queenie. Lana is one of those actresses who can make you love and hate a character at the same time.

Secondly I love Gina's complexity. I really like a character with a lot of depth. One would think she's evil, just evil but behind that there's a back story, a legit reason for her way of thinking. We've got woman who is just as miserable as those she cursed, unlike most portrayals of the queen Regina was hurt by her own curse (the loss of her father). She goes from Disney's typical heartless vileness to someone who is actually conflicted about her actions; whilst Disney's Queenie had no regrets about killing Snow, OUAT's Queenie cried when killing her father. It's a bit hard for a view to tell exactly how Gina feels when she has such conflicted feelings.

That's another reason I love Gina, she isn't as evil as she seems; deep down she just wants love and happiness. She's misunderstood and and almost a victim herself, she tries her best to find happiness she just approaches it the wrong way. After all she tries so hard to gain love and affection from Henry; she buys him nice toys and comic books and built him a new playground yet he doesn't care. She hasn't really even shown signs of physical abuse. People get so mad about her sending Henry to therapy but she just doesn't want Henry to hate her so much. Gina is the reason he lives in a mansion rather then some foster home. Gina also tries to keep him safe, most mothers would be alarmed if a strange woman who was in jail before (birth mom or not) came into town threatening to take her son away. Part of the reason Gina keeps Henry away from Emma is because she doesn't want him to get hurt. I wouldn't say that that's particularly evil. Another reason I believe she isn't as evil is because unlike most villains she has the capability to love. The only reason her curse worked is because she sacrificed something she loved. She did love her father very much but gelt that this curse was the only way out of her misery. She was also able to love the genie; but it was one of those forbidden love cases, she was already married so loving the genie almost wasn't an option. She cared enough about him to try to save him from a possible execution. Even if that meant telling him she never loved him.
Gina had also loved Graham I doubt she would've punched Emma in the face for stealing him if she didn't care.

The sunshine-y, rainbow-y characters are boring. Always concerned with doing the right thing. It's so predictable. Generally, the bad guys are more exciting because they're not held back by pesky stuff like strict morals or fear of consequences. They're fun to watch.

That was a pretty general statement in regards to liking bad guys, which for some reason, feels like I give out a lot. I like Regina 'cause she's a badass. (Plus, I'll root for whoever makes it their mission to bring misery to the characters I dislike. Go Regina/Hook/Cora.)

I agree about the "sunshine-y" characters. Especially Charming...I always feel myself yawning when he's on screen. BLAND BLAND BLAND!!! Good guys CAN be fine...but this show tries to make them TOO good at times. Villain always seem to be more entertaining to watch :)

I like her character because she has a lot of depth.

It's the same reason I love Rumpelstiltskin, but Regina is a lot different.

She's a very broken character, and she doesn't know herself quite as well as Rumple does. I often pity her, and I think she definitely deserves her happy ending.

That said, I have always preferred the wicked Regina from the start of season 1. I appreciate what the writers are trying to do with her redemption, but I think she is more interesting when she's more evil-queenish.

Also, Lana Parilla is fantastic.

Another reason lots of the fandom loves her is because of Swan Queen, which has really taken off because Regina and Emma have so much chemistry.

Anyway. That's just my take on it. Believe me, there are also plenty of people who dislike her.

I always seem to be more drawn to the villains...especially in this show....Gina, Rumple, Hook...OMFG I love them all SOOO MUCH!!!

I like that we get to see different sides to the villains in this show. Plus....I'm a straight woman...but when Regina is all in her evil queen mode...damn I'd go lesbian for that woman!!!

Lana plays her so perfectly. A part of me wants to see her redeemed...but I'd rather they wait until later in the series because I love her so much when she's being evil! Love the evil smiles and just how she presents herself. So much more interesting than the Charming clan!

Well, for me I like her because she's unpredictable and a mystery

It's not about good vs bad, because I have favorite in both side, but I just like a character who surprise me, a character who is not a cliche
(I really hope they didn't mess up regina's character)

But the reason why she's popular, maybe because she's kinda a badass and also lana parrilla did an amazing job with her character

because she's someone who was not born evil. i really started liking her after the stable boy episode. i'll admit, i hated her before that especially during the scene in heart is a lonely hunter when she took out graham's heart and caused him to be her pet against his will. however now after seeing the stable boy, we've all seen the pain she's gone through with her mother and stuff and really snow white is partially responsible for regina's turn to evil since she was the one who blabbed her secret.the way i like to look at it, regina's the type of character who is a mix betweeen good and evil. granted mostly evil but she's done a few good things as well

Well first off who won't love Regina. I love the fact that she was once evil then turned good just for Henry and herself. I am also was pleased with the fact that She got to save her dad after she was the reason he died. One of the main reasons I love Regina is that Henry now has 2 moms, I just think it's a cool way to involve both of them with their child. I just hate the idea that people ship Swan Queen. It is not because of the fact that it would be a lesbian couple its the fact that Captain Swan just over powers all ships ever made.

I definitely like Regina better than 3 years ago when I originally posted this question. I went back over the summer and rewatched all of the previous seasons and remembered why I couldn't stand Regina at first but why I like her now (although I still prefer Emma, Snow, and Belle). I do like that Regina has joined the Hero side and finally works with everyone.
