Well anyone who said that Mello was better than Near was wrong, I think that Near was, by far, better than Mello because Near stayed alive through out the series

You can't say who's better because near said it by himself that kira was caught because mello sacrifised himself and near could find out that there are 2 death notes. if mello wouldn't do that, near would be dead instead of him

Ok, but still, that doesn't mean that Mello is better than Near, that just proves the fact on HOW they defeated Kira in the first place and yes I do agree that because of Mello Near was able to prove that Light Yagami was indeed Kira, but the fact that Near was picked to be L's susecor proves a lot from the fact that Mello wasn't.... but interesting comment Rika, I would be looking forward to your other opinions!

near is better, mello gets annoying, also near has great taste in toys.

I can't choose. Near is smart but too much of a smart ASS. Mello is cool but too emtional. And L didn't choose anyone, his oringinal choice was someone called Beyond Birthday (L metions this 1 episode after Naomi Misora dies that she helped him with the Los angles B.B muder case). Near and Mello are like L very much and are equally smart. Near said he AND Mello together can surpass not alone but together!

I love them both, but that I like them or not doesn't mean that they're smart or not. And the fact that Near was chosen doesn't prove that he's better/smarter than Mello, for me both are pretty smart. ^.^

As L's heir, Mello is more deserving. He works harder. He's more intelligent. Then again, he did make several mistakes along the way.

As a person, I think he still wins. Mello has more to define his personality, and while Near is certainly no ruthless drone, it cannot be denied that Mello has already developed the ability to care for other humans, even if they both have a generally good understanding of people.
