Episode 7: Marvel NOW Ms. Marvel #1 - #5
[Warning! This review contains spoilers!]
Nick: Hello and welcome to another episode of Comic Talk!
Sunset Shimmer: Today we're going to review Ms. Marvel Vol 3 #1 - #5.
Nick: Our story starts with Kamala Khan, a teenage muslim-american girl from Jersey City. She has a rather normal life, with friends and school and such.
Sunset Shimmer: One night, Kamala sneaks out to a party that she is not allowed to go to. She meets up with the "cool kids" and is peer pressured into drinking some orange juice (with a bit of Vodka).
Nick: However, her friend Bruno steps in and pulls her out. Kamala storms out of the party and runs into some mist.
Sunset Shimmer: This mist knocks her out, and she gets a hallucination of Captain America, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel.
Nick: Kamala has a conversation with these hallucinations before waking up.
Sunset Shimmer: Kamala punches her way out of what appears to be a cocoon, and finds herself in the second Ms. Marvel outfit, as she learns that she can now shape-shift.
Nick: Kamala decides to test out her new powers, such as shrinking to the size of a beetle.
Sunset Shimmer: However, the local jock is a bit drunk and getting handsy with a girl on a dock. He accidentally drops the girl and Kamala uses shape-shifting to make her hand giant to catch her.
Nick: Kamala heads back home and gets grounded for sneaking out. In her room, Kamala decides to use her powers for good and to be just like Carol Danvers.
Sunset Shimmer: The next day, Kamala does some research her powers. Also, she stops a robbery going at Bruno's shop.
Nick: It turns out that the robber is Bruno's brother, and he owes a gang a lot of money. Kamala decides to fight the gang, and she gets injured, and runs.
Sunset Shimmer: The next day at school, she trains and masters her new powers. She also battles the gang again and destroys their base. Ms. Marvel declares that she will defend Jersey City as the new Ms. Marvel!
Nick: Now for pros and cons:
Pros:
*The artwork is very nice, even bordering on Miyazaki levels
*Kamala Khan is a fun character, and a worthy successor to Carol Danvers at Ms. Marvel. She's also one of the first well known muslim-american superheroes.
Cons:
*The teenage drama kind of bothers me, as it's been done before.
Rating: 9 / 10
