It depends on some stories, like Peter Pan, the mermaids are evil, but in The Little Mermaid, the mermaid was really nice, she even saved the Prince's life! And there is a Brazillian legend about a mermaid named Iara that uses her voice to hypnotize men and kill them...so..yeah, it really depends on the story.

Well, there's a difference between merpeople and sirens. Sirens are the evil ones, NOT merpeople. Though some legends refer to them as merpeople, they're probably talking about sirens.
