First of all, you gotta ask him if it's okay with him if you two go out. Bros before hoes, as the saying goes.

Second, give it time, anyway. Don't talk to him or her yet, because if they just broke up, they're both still hurting. A year is a pretty big chunk of time to be dating someone. Their feelings are raw, and you don't want to upset anyone or end up as a rebound. I think you should give it at least a full month, personally, which is enough time for them to do most of their hurting and get a move on. I know it'll seem like a long time to you, but it's best to proceed with caution.

Tell your friend how you feel and ask if it's ok that you ask her out. If he says no than just give it time

@ecpjill: You act like it's possible to control who you like. It's not.

You wank to ask her out, that's kinky. XD

Anyway, to be serious, I would do what my friend did when he was in that situation, he asked me if I was okay with it, and then proceed with caution. (I had no problem with him dating my ex, he was a good guy, and heck, she wasn't my girlfriend anymore. I didn't care.)

dont ask her out yet. they dated for a YEAR! a year is a long time. make sure your friend whose a guy is ok with it first. cos u will lose a friend if u ask her out now! cos my friend dated this guy for six months then he dumped her and my other friend started dating him. they still hate each other to this day...

so just wait a while, make sure your friend (guy) is ok with it, then go for it. lol, i just dumbed down my whole paragraph. i shoulda done that in the first place lol

Everybody else pretty much covered most of it. Ask your friend if he's okay with you and his ex going out, but wait for a while first. A week, a month, whenever you feel that they're over each other. If he says yes, go ahead and ask her out.
