well,its just one of an advice..but i think u should go find out more about him and his background. it doesnt mean u arent trust him but just let be selfish (i think its not selfish) and be curious bout him. its for ur best.

ur friends might be wrong but theres possibilities that they're right because they already knew him first. and ur arent blame for find out the "real" him.
