I think you ought to do it especially if it's a small town, like Dragonfly said. I understand that it's scary, but that's exactly why it should exist. We need a place to belong, where we feel comfortable in our skin in otherwise hostile environment.

It definitely sounds like a fantastic idea. The more places that show approval of LGBT, the more out-of-place people will start to feel for discriminating against you. It's especially important in schools too because if kids and teens can learn to accept you, there's a good chance they'll grow into better adults.

I understand it could be tough to start up, though. School kids can be shallow, but it's likely you will find some who are in favour of the club. It's definitely worth pitching your idea to a member of staff.

There's one in mine! I'm a bit afraid to join though, I'm not good with people and have never joined a school club before.
