Congrats House is a great show! You definitely need to rent seasons 1-5 or order them through netflix to completely understand everything between the characters but I'll give you a brief overview in my own words.
Dr. Gregory House is a cranky, narcisistic, yet world renowned diagnocstician specializing in diagnostic medicine and nephrology (the study of the kidneys). Dr. Lisa Cuddy, his boss and James James Wilson, Oncologist are Houses two closest friends. House and Cuddy have danced around a romantic relationship for years and even have some history but so far have only shared a kiss well a real one anyway. Watch season five and you'll understand what I mean. Dr. House is also mentor/boss to Dr.s Chase, Cameron, and Foreman during seasons 1-3 and in season 4 brings on new team doctors Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley and Dr. Chris Taub.
House is a recovering drug addict whose drug career is explored and resolved through the duration of the show so far. He is brilliant and very complex, proving to be so by solving medical mysteries that no one else could crack. He also does so by having a great team of doctors working under him and two great friends that do their best to keep him in line.
