It's a prejudice...

Prejudice- An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.

...Can it be fair?

He didn't have a good reason. It was based on a grudge.

If Dumbledore were to be prejudiced against Slytherin, you'd say it's unfair, bellatrix114. Why is this any different?

They were in Gryffindor, yes that's true. But that doesn't justify his prejudice against Gryffindors. And not just them, he treated Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws badly too. Anyone who wasn't in Slytherin was his bullying prey. Poor Neville, no wonder he was frightened of Snape most.

Don't get me wrong, I love Snape, but everyone has flaws and his flaw is that he hates everyone except for his own house.

I can't blame him for being the way he is. It's not as though he made a decision to hate everyone, it was brought on him by constant bullying and teasing by the same rival who took away the love of his life. That's enough to make anyone turn sour.

To make it worse, he wasn't able to save Lily and therefore felt responsible for it for the rest of his life. It's possible that he literally hated EVERYONE to some degree, including himself.

I just can't be angry at someone like that.

Just because he has a grudge against a few Gryffindors, doesn't mean he should hate every Gryffindor... or everyone else, for that matter.

Well I wouldn't get that pisssed off about how mean he is to Harry (That is understandable cause of James) but why is he so mean to Neville?

@simpleplan, he can't hate all the Gryffindors because of Sirius and James. I do like him, he is a brave man, but his prejudice is unfair, understandable, but still very unfair.

And @RavenclawRocks, I have a little theory, I think he hates Neville that much, because the profecy could be about Potter or Neville, and if it was about Neville, Lily would be still alive. It is just a theory though.

It's unfair, yes. Though I do see where he came from. Events in his life made him rather cold towards everyone else.

DeniseAnne picked Yes and No:
Yes, because he suffered James' bullying, while Gryffindors should be kind and loyal to their mates.

No, because most of all Gryffindors showed their brave and gave their life for all the magic world's security.
