“Come on Kiku! Look at that beautiful moon!”
Pointing excitedly and dragging Kiku along with you through the crowded American streets, you exited the movie theater with the same childlike enthusiasm you entered it with. Kiku smiled behind you, squeezing your hand and permitting you to lead. After dating for three years, you swore you were the happiest couple on earth; how could anyone else hope to be so happy?
Turning abruptly to thank Kiku for taking you out with a kiss, you exclaimed, “Would you like to go to the park?” Exuberance blooming in your eyes, you deemed this the best date ever! Well-planned, as usual, Kiku’s newest dating expedition had led you to an amusement park followed by dinner and a movie; even though anyone else would have been exhausted, you were hyper.
“Actually,” Kiku smiled quietly, “let’s go to the ferry.”
“Seriously?” You blinked. “Don’t you have to book rides in advance?”
Cool summer air sweeping across his gentle features, Kiku replied, “Already done.” Grinning, you grabbed his hand and raced towards the harbor. He always knew what to do and though he sometimes had trouble keeping up with you, he had grown accustomed to your energetic nature. You were so excited that you missed the subtle whisper that fell prey to the wind, “Watashi wa anata o aishite imasu.” (I love you).
Arriving at the ferry and hopping on, you danced around the deck, dress fanning above your knees. Before a laugh could escape your lips, Kiku caught your hands and led you into a waltz. Sky sparkling with stars, moon shimmering in the rocking waters, everything was perfect. Underneath your fun-loving demeanor, you were quite the romantic and Kiku was well-aware of such.
“You are beautiful,” Kiku stated calmly, beaming, “especially when you smile.”
Blushing, your lips split into your classic, happy-go-lucky grin. “Aww! I know!” Even though you knew you were beautiful, sometimes you wondered how you could compare to your boyfriend; he was the dazzling one. Sure, he was quiet and shy, but he could be so sweet and bold. As he spun you around again, you were so lost in your thoughts that you tripped and fell into the side railing. “Ow!”
Kiku was at your side immediately, studying you. “Are you okay?”
Trying to laugh it off, you forced a smile. “Yes! Fine! No problem!” Cringing in pain, you realized that your ankle hurt. Kiku, knowing better, supported you to the nearest bench. Sitting down, you glared at the throbbing before declaring, “Not to worry! The pain will ebb away into nothing in no time!”
Kiku sighed, relieved. “You don’t have to pretend to be okay for my sake.”
Blinking, you replied, “But, I am okay!” Kiku wielded his knowing stare on you and you lapsed into momentary silence before admitting, “Well, when I was with Arthur, I always had to pretend to be okay.” You lowered your eyes. The Brit was a hard subject for you to approach even though you had dumped him years ago. Now everything was quiet and awkward. You elaborated, “He’d worry way too much despite being a total hard-ass when I got hurt. Old habits die hard though, y’know?”
From the unconvinced expression on Kiku’s face, you knew your smile was bleak.
“I’m sorry,” Kiku caressed your cheek with soft fingertips, “I did not mean to bring up a painful subject.”
Pouting, you replied, “You didn’t bring it up! I did!” Jabbing your thumb at yourself, you muttered, “My recklessness nearly hurled me off the boat anyway!” Optimism would save the day! But Kiku still seemed solemn. “Hey, what’s up darlin’? Something on your mind?”
“More so, on my heart,” Kiku softened his voice, eyes following suit.
Worried that you might have hurt his feelings somehow, you connected your forehead with his. “Tell me what you’re thinking about.” Puppy eyes accompanying your pout, you asked, “Pretty please?” The Japanese man poked your nose, but his finger dropped to your lips, running against them.
“I want you to be with me forever,” he said quietly, causing your heart to flutter.
“Like,” you tried to relate it somehow, “marrying me, or something?”
Voice grounded and composed, Kiku replied, “Exactly.” This forced a flush in your cheeks as you looked at him. Without any warning other than the possibility that he possibly wanted to propose to you, maybe just maybe, he withdrew a ring box from his pocket and presented it to you. Eyes glistening with cheerful tears, you couldn’t believe what was happening as the little lid flipped open and Kiku started smiling genuinely. “Anata wa watashi to kekkon shite kureru?”
Confused because you didn’t speak Japanese, you stared at him.
Rare and wonderful was Kiku’s laugh as he translated; “Will you marry me?”
You figured he said something like that. Without warning, you pounced on him, squealing, “¡Sí! Oui! Ja!” You stopped, not knowing how to affirm your answer in any other languages except your favorite one: “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Tackling Kiku with kisses, you avowed your answer a thousand times over.
Even with the thousandth kiss, Kiku continued returning your affections.
