You couldn’t wait for Ludwig to come home—it was your fifth anniversary (you had been dating for five years) and he always remembered occasions that were special to you. Often, you wished you could make the occasion more special by being more than his girlfriend, but you were happy, regardless.
Glancing around the foyer where he would greet you, you prided yourself on the gorgeous display of his favourite flowers, the banister you’d fashioned yourself, and the petals embellishing the floor; your work had paid off beautifully.
This was perfect.
Except for the fact that Ludwig was still at work; he was never late! It was odd.
Scurrying into the kitchen to finish dinner, you didn’t notice the front door quietly opening and closing. Before you knew it, two strong arms were wrapped around your waist.
“Eep!” You squeaked, surprised. “Ah! Ludwig! You’re home!” A smile split your lips.
“Happy anniversary,” Ludwig gruffly greeted, grinning as you turned to kiss him excitedly.
“Okay!” Your bubbly excitement kicked in. “Dinner will be ready in just a minute!”
Ice blue eyes suddenly intense, Ludwig exclaimed, “Hold on! There is something I want to do before dinner.” Immediately, you pouted. Always, you started your traditions with dinner. Never, however, could you disagree with Ludwig when he had such an earnest look in his eyes and you wondered briefly if he had already made you dinner, hence why he was late.
Ludwig didn’t say anything as he stole your smaller hand into his own and led you back to the foyer.
He was counting on you to be blissfully oblivious until the right time came.
Luckily, you usually were.
Allowing yourself to be led, bouncing behind him, you noticed how serious he seemed. This puzzled you. Was something wrong? “Ludwig? Is everything okay? You seem tense!” Your wide eyes searched him curiously, seeking his face, and when his eyes became available, there was only one way to describe them: emotional. Your lips fell ajar, but you stayed silent.
“Here,” his voice was hard, “close your eyes. No peeking.”
Obediently, you did as you were told. Though, you squinted a little upon hearing him unzip his bag in a flustered manner; but as soon as he whipped around, your eyes were shut tightly. Heart and head racing, you wondered what he was up to. Surprise love-making filtered into your mind, but he was too solemn for that. Hide and seek seemed like the better idea. Oh, wait! You knew now. He had to be hiding a gift for you to find!
“All right,” Ludwig eventually said, voice muffled, “open.”
Carefully, you opened one eye. It took you a moment to realize that the blue gaze you searched for was staring at you from below. Looking down, you met his embarrassed, flushed face. He was on one knee and holding a ring box, which he held out to you. As your gape descended upon the rim of the box, he prudently flicked it open to reveal a ring.
A beautiful, intricate diamond sparkled at you.
“W-whoa!” Tears whelmed in your eyes as you carefully accepted the gift. “This is beautiful!”
Smiling bashfully, Ludwig muttered, “I thought you would like it.” Too dazed to think normally, you admired the ring as you slipped it onto your finger. Reddening, you realized Ludwig was watching and you tilted your head. He lifted a serious eyebrow. “Is that a yes?”
“Eh?” You blinked. Realization whacked you upside the head. “Oh! OH! Um…”
Now tears were running down your cheeks, concerning Ludwig. Standing and curling a strand of your hair around his finger as he pulled your face close to his, he murmured, “Are you okay?” You nodded erratically. Ludwig reached the conclusion that you were shocked. “You know, even though it annoys me sometimes, your oblivious reactions are kind of…cute.” He shifted against you, hand dropping to your waist and pulling you closer. “Do you understand my question?”
Head falling forward then back, you looked up at him. “I understand, but,” you smiled, “say it?”
Eyes widening, blush sprawling across his pale cheeks, Ludwig glanced away. Lifting your hands to his face, you guided his gaze to you as the German muttered, “Marry me?”
“Yes!” Your face lit up and you threw your arms around him. “Yes! Yes! YES!”
Kissing his lips excitedly, you felt his passion push into you as he pinned you against the wall and kissed you back, lovingly. He showed his affections physically, a method you understood, and as his kisses became deeper and sweeter, you realized how much he meant to you. This was your world, your everything, your Ludwig.
This was the best day of your life and nothing could distract you from loving this man.
Not even the smoke alarm ringing in the kitchen.
