In the first season, Jesse was the male lead (well- the only lead) of Vocal Adrenaline, New Direction's main rival show choir. He and Rachel met in a music store halfway through the season and sang a duet ('Hello') and started a relationship. Nobody else in New Directions trusted him, and they were unhappy about the relationship. Rachel had lied about breaking up with him once. Jesse transferred to WMHS and joined New Directions for a short time. Rachel did not know that Vocal Adrenaline's coach, Shelby, is her biological mother. Shelby had told Jesse to get close to her, and he aided her in finding her mother. Jesse broke up with Rachel after she triple-casted him with Finn and Puck as Joey in 'Run Joey Run.' He rejoined Vocal Adrenaline, and after his Spring Break, right before Regionals, Jesse and VA arrived at WMHS uninvited and covered the choir room with toilet paper (and sang) and sent New Directions into a funk. Later, Jesse called Rachel asking to meet her in the parking lot. She runs to him, but VA members come out from hiding behind cars and throws eggs at her. He crushes the last one on her forhead. (Later, ND performs 'Give Up the Funk' and got rid of their funk, scaring VA in the process.) At Regionals, Rachel was the only ND member to stay to see Vocal Adrenaline perform (everyone else went to the hospital with Quinn). Vocal Adrenaline beat New Directions.
Jesse returned in Prom Queen in Season 2. He had flunked out of college for not going to acedemic classes. He regrets giving up love for the competition. He becomes Rachel's prom date but Finn gets upset when he sees him close with Rachel. They start a fight and both get kicked out of prom. In the next episode, Jesse becomes an assistant for New Directions, and tells them to hold auditions for Nationals soloist. He rigs the auditions so Rachel will win, and insults Santana's, Kurt's, and Mercedes' numbers. (Once again, everyone else but Rachel hates him). Finn is disappointed to see him and Rachel kiss. Will goes against Jesse's advice and doesn't chose a winner. In the finale, Jesse states that Finn and Rachel kissing at the end of 'Pretending' at Nationals threw the competition.
