I mentally edited that scene so river drops from the ceiling (a la serenity opening sequence) to stop book in the coridoor before he gets near them, muffles him, says some river-esque line about "you don't know what you're about to ruin" and lets him go when they kiss (because she feels what they do) posted over a year ago.
