Draco was scared and tried to do the softest things to kill Dumbledore, such as trying to poison him or giving him an enchanted necklace. All he was doing was being scared and confused. He was so emotionally damaged, I'm sure it would have been possible to change his mind someways. And he would choose whatever he would feel right to if he would know he was save.
