I believe that he has OTHER IDEAS AT FIRST BECAUSE HE didn't want to trust some one and with his backgroud I would say it took a really long time to fully understand he had feelings for tris
I think he was just trying to teach her how to be stronger when they get to know each other better then the relationship develops more but if you don't know someone and you teach them you want to make them the best they can be. Also I saw an interview where they were talking about the relationship between the two characters and I have to agree completely with what Shey said which was that the relationship needed to have a very strong point of respect and you cant just have feelings straight away for someone there is love at first sight and stuff but even that has go deeper in what a relationship really is. You start with respect then go from there. Respect leads to trust and then trust leads to love and it is difficult but it can be done and it has been done before.
I think he was covering up his feeling, but I also think he was trying to make sure he was that she made it to the dauntless because he wanted to be with her.
