Disney Princess Question

What's The Big Deal About Belle?

I honestly don't understand the huge fuss over Belle. I watch the movie a few days ago and I don't like her at all, she's not horrible just not interesting. They had a good thing going with her being an outcast who loves reading and wants adventure. However they just didn't add too much to her after that. I think she's WAY too perfect, she's a Mary-Sue in my opinion. She has little to no flaws.

I think she seems more like a symbol rather than a character. To me she seems useless in the movie. I mean sure she's the one who's suppose to break the curse but anybody could've done that, it didn't even have to be a girl. They never said it had to be romantic love, they just said love, that could mean anything. It just seems her only use for the movie is to break the spell. I'm not saying that's not important but just seems like she could've been more active.

Plus I think it's annoying how she never goes after her dream of adventure. I mean I'm sure her dad could go awhile without her. Not trying to hate on her or anything I'm just saying. I'm not trying to get anyone mad I'm just stating my point of view. Can somebody explain to me what the big deal is about her please?

I'm just going to answer you as I read.

Belle is not a Mary-Sue. I'm sorry, but your argument is just totally invalid there. She's stubborn and snobby, always thinks her point of view is right. She looks down on people who don't read or are "provincial". She's not a Mary-Sue, so stop trying that one. It's wrong. Ginny Weasley is a Mary-Sue. Bella Swan is a Mary-Sue. Not Belle.
"I think she seems more like a symbol rather than a character".
-_________________-
are you kidding me.
You don't consider her a character? She's so full of personality, she has goals and ambitions and people she loves and cares for. She has morals and she's clever with words, she can sing she can dance she can dream. More active? What did you want her to do? I'm sorry she's not as hyper as Ariel. She goes looking for her father, she takes his place, she sneaks off into the west wing, she runs away, she fixes the beast, she dances with him, she changes him, she makes him love, she goes back for her father, she cares for him, she fights Gaston, she goes back for the best, she cries for him, she kisses him, she's wonderful. What more do you want her to do?
And as for your last statement, I really don't understand what point your trying to make here. Of course her father might've been able to go a few days without her, but she didn't want to leave him. He was old and frail and he was all she had. What if she left & died and he was left alone? What if he died while she was gone? She just wouldn't be able to bear it.

Sorry if I came across as harsh, but I love Belle, so...yeah. I hope you get my reasoning.

Ginny Weasley is not a Mary Sue. She has plenty of flaws. I even wrote an article about it.

Because she's AWESOME. She's smart, she's gorgeous, she's so unique and no she's not a mary sue. Many people can relate to her but not many people are actually like her. She's wise beyond her years, and she kinda reminds me of Elizabeth Bennet :)

Somehow, I knew this was your question! LOL.
She is relatable to other people because in her town, she is the odd one out- I know I feel like it! And her yearning for ADVENTURE IN THE GREAT WIDE SOMEWHERE must be relatable for people who want to break free from their poor provincial life/town to pursue a dream. As the princess with the most gumption and solid sense of self, Belle embraces the things that make her different, like her vivid imagination and love of knowledge. Additionally, Belle should be commended for her ability to look beyond external appearances to see a person's internal goodness, because, let's face it, the beast is no Prince Charming, and had any other princess been in Belle's shoes, the ending probably wouldn't have been quite so happily ever after.

I hoped you somehow find that Belle is actually a big deal, if not... ehhhh it's the EYE OF THE BEHOLDER :D

all this and more my friend XD
i also dont get the hype about her. for me she is the least interesting character out of the princesses. i can see and find more interesting stuff in all the other girls, just not about her.
but i guess in the end it is the fanbase that will make people either belle fans or haters ( even though it is a harsh word for just disliking a character XD) i used to like her as a kid, but after i joined the fanbase... oh boy, i almost wish the movie were never made, even though it played a big role in my life once XD all the praising about her outstanding personality blablabla , while she is just your average nextdoor girl type, the other girls also want adventure, escape their "prison", want to find someone who understands them, but because belle can hold a book, has a dress many love and has the non interesting face of a doll, she is praised all over the web...it gets SO boring after a while XD so boring, that i begann to be bored of her! XD i also dont get why people claim that she is smart, she does not make one intelligent move in the whole movie. okay, maybe that with the door and gaston, but that was more a i-have-to-do-something moment, nothing special.

like i said somewhere else before, maybe i would still like her, if they used one of the other versions for the movie they had and would have had more time to develope the story and characters... but as it is now - nope sir, i cant get myself to like her anymore

Yeah she use to be my second favorite, after Ariel, but now she's my least favorite. She's not horrible but not interesting, she's okay. It's mostly her fans that irritate me. I actually think she's beautiful. However I'm one of the few that HATES all her outfits except the pink one. I think she should've had a personality more like Madellaine from The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2. Also I don't think she's that smart either. Sure she knows fancy words that can confuse Gaston but that's not exactly hard to do. The only smart thing she did was outsmart Cogsworth to give her a tore. To me she's more of a symbol than a character with little personality. I actually think Aurora is more interesting than her, but that could be because I'm interested on what her life was like growing up with the fairies. But yeah Belle is just a bland character that I think has only her looks going on for her.

Belle is the ultimate relatable character. Most of us have been there - not fitting in, being all alone because nobody understands you. Concerning flaws, she is nosy, and she has quite a temperament (which she needs to match the temperament of the beast). And she is stubborn. Oh, and the spell said "earn her love", so they meant romantic love. And since when is is a bad thing to care for your parents?

Not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying I think he can take care of himself. He was going to leave her for a few days to go to the fair. If he can leave her for a few days I think she could every now and again go on an adventure and leave him alone. He's not a baby he's a grown man.

you do have a point, especially when you say that she never goes after her dream, that really bothers me. but i understand why people like Belle, they relate to her in some way.
she was already my fave for a couple of months, but i didn't knew Mulan at the time xD
she really is overrated, despite what people say. maybe they love the movie more, than herself, and they get confused? i'm pretty sure that if belle was the protagonist in "the princess and the frog", no one would give a s*** about her, even if she had the same personality.
but she's a classic and that explains a lot

i still like Belle very much, she's strong, curious and i love how she keeps rejecting gaston. she's not very interesting, i agree, and maybe that's why i can't love her

Yeah I can't like her or dislike her. But yeah is someone like Tiana was in Beauty and The Beast she'd probably get more love. Whenever people would be all in love with Belle, I always said that I prefered Kayley. They always said "Oh you mean that knock off of her" I mean sure they look a little alike but not much. Besides they're completely different in personalities, she reminds me of Mulan, Ariel, and fiesty like Jasmine. Just shows how some people can be.

meh, i don't really like Kayley, she keeps saying that she wants to save camelot, yet, she is saved by everyone in the movie. like nostalgia critic said, she's saved by a blind man and a freakin' chicken xD

^yes they did. what exactly did belle do that was so much smarter? aurora saw threw her aunts story and knew right away that even though phillip was cute he was a STRANGER and started to back off, oh, then she gives up her love for ruling a kingdom, even though it made her miserable. cinderella bravely put up with her family's hatred even though it almost broke her, she never once retaliated. i'd LOVE to see belle do that, she prolly couldnt without being the snobby, insufferable know it all she is. and snow, i dont even need to go into how great she is. belle does NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING the others would or could not do.

A lot of people like Belle because they can relate to her. Everyone feels like an outcast at one point in time or another. She's also rebellious and again everyone rebels at least one time or another in their lives. You also have to keep in mind she is young when the movie takes place and may not be bold enough to go off on a random adventure. When I was a teenager I always dreamed of going on a Hobbitesque adventure of my own, but realistically that was never going to happen.

Belle is not a personal favorite of mine, but a Mary-Sue she is not. I would say that her character is not as fully developed as it could have been.

1st: They had a good thing going with her being an outcast who loves reading and wants adventure. However they just didn't add too much to her after that.

What? They were adding additional traits of her personality throughout the whole movie! They showed how much she loves her father and how much she values family. They showed she's stubborn. They showed she is curious and adventurous. They showed she has a good heart when she returned the Beast to the castle. They showed she's patient and understanding.

2. I think she seems more like a symbol rather than a character. To me she seems useless in the movie.

I am not even going to comment on that! This has to be one of the silliest sentences I've ever read. And just for your information, if you don't like a character, that doesn't necessary make them unnecessary to the movie.

3. Plus I think it's annoying how she never goes after her dream of adventure.

Well, she wants adventure and excitement, but she also understands there are more important things in life than being full of yourself, spoiled and always getting that you want (like Ariel). She doesn't go in search for abstract adventures because she loves her father, respects him and does not want to desert him.

Maybe people like her because even though everyone says she's beautiful, she doesn't become full of herself or superficial. She is smart and brave, and she fell in love with the prince when he was under a spell to make him a beast. The other traditional princesses were kind of weak and powerless, and they fell in love at first sight mainly because of looks and charm.

100% agree on what hisblueeyes stated. That would have been my answer as well. Couldn't have said it better myself. Well said hisblueeyes.

I love her because she is smart, beautiful, loves to read, is pretty wise for someone her age, and is pretty clever with words sometimes while arguing or trying to prove a point to someone. Plus she is caring and brave. She would sacrifice herself and her dream to help and care for the ones she loves. Like her father for example. Yeah, she doesn't go finding her adventure, but she does have her reasons to stay because of her father. So fate brought her adventure to her. Plus, she is considered as an odd ball. Which I like because I feel like one sometimes myself around people. I like to know someone who is right there where I'm at too. The big main reason why I love her so much is because she doesn't fall for her Prince at first sight. She gets to know him before there is any sort of romantic or caring feelings set in. Which I think is realistic for a relationship. Not falling in love at first sight or by the sound of their voice or beauty. But by their personality on who they are deep down inside.

hey, i'm sorry if this is late but i feel the same way :D, she's no Mary sue cause Mary sue has to be perfect, all i can say is that, people can say whatever they want about her, "she's unique, she's smart, she's amazing she's gorgeous, she's so wise, i feel so relatable to her( honestly i don't care if a character aren't relatable to me, i've passed that ), she's so curious" all that perfect thing, one of my problem is that, did you noticed in the beginning, how she is soooo happy of how she is, and how she doesn't care what people think of her, then out of nowhere I WANT ADVENTURE IN THE GREAT WIDE SOMEWHERE BECAUSE SUDDENLY I WANT MORE EVEN THOUGH I SAID I WAS HAPPY, honestly, i was like "whoa when did that come ? O_o" i don't know what makes her wise though, and her curiosity could get herself killed, did she even know the word "Curiosity killed the cat" i don't think she does, oh and her "Clever" comeback to the beast word, why is she mad at the beast for scaring her ? it's her own fault, not the beast, hello clever and witty person that everyone says she is, you entered a room that the beast forbidden you to enter cause you're oh so charming curiosity just wants to know, honestly she isn't odd or unique like people says she is, to me she is normal, stubborn? yes, and btw does Belle even work ? housework doesn't count cause even i did that, to me she doesn't have a dream to find a greater things in life, just hoping something exciting would actually happen in her life, even though clearly she said she is happy in the beginning, honestly it's like a bored person wanting more in life, which is more whining than dreaming, "Yeah she's not a princess, so she's allowed to complain about the things we're related to" honestly Belle is never trapped but just bored which is whining not dreaming, cause a princess life is sooo relatable to a peasant's life, but she's bland to me, typical normal girl who loves to read who just happen to find what she wants in the end, bland but i don't hate her, that's all i gotta say, and btw to anyone who loves the movie don't buy the high definition one's, the characters look like it's cheaply made

i think the other fan was right, they confuse loving =movie with loving = belle.
