Disney Princess Question

REAL princesses?

I'm sorry...I hate to be the jerk that asks this, but I'd like to have someone give me a real and detailed answer, please?

What makes Mulan or Pocahontas princesses?
Some people even say Meg and Esmeralda are princesses. Jane is even considered a princess to many fans.

Mulan did not come from royal family nor did she marry a royal. Pocahontas I sort of understand, but she was a chief's daughter, and native Americans had many tribes with many leaders and their leaders typically weren't renowned as being royal.

As far as Meg goes, she got with a god, but not really a royal. Here's a least makes more sense than Esmeralda who was just a gypsy who married a military man. Jane (Tarzan's Jane, not Wendi's daughter)...well...she married...A wild jungle man. King of the apes, maybe...? But still...

Don't get me wrong! I love all of the Disney leading ladies, but these girls I could see being called heroins; not princesses. If you wanted to talk about real princesses that are left out, what about Kida from Atlantis and Eilonwy from the black Cauldron? I don't hear much about them...
Even the animal ones could be considered princesses like Kiara from the Lion King 2? Heck, they call Bambi the prince of the forest, so wouldn't Feline be his princess?...Guess I should just focus on the human question first, huh?

Anyways, I'm not trying to be a total jerk, but I really do want an explanation of why people call these girls Disney Princesses.

All great answers! Thanks to everyone for giving informative replies and being really nice about it. (really, I don't want to come off as some sort of jerk!) Thanks again...and Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas... Hanukkah...all that good stuff.

Because a lot of fans look up to them and they're very popular. Plus, they're also the main character from their movie. Which would make them a little more popular from some of the other Disney heroins. So Disney decided to consider to add them to the DP line up. I really don't know why, but this is what I've heard on the reason why they're considered as one. In my book they're not Disney princesses, but it really doesn't bother me.

“The franchise is now comprised of ten female protagonists from ten different Walt Disney animated films who are either royal by birth, royal by marriage, or considered a princess due to their significant portrayal of heroinism in their film.” - Disney Wiki

As far as unofficial princess go, fans have all kinds of reasons why they consider them princesses. I go mostly by the playing a significant portrayal of heroinism rule.

On this spot, we only go by who Disney puts on the lineup. Disney simply put Mulan and Pocahontas in the line-up despite them not being actual princesses in their movies because they are strong, positive characters that girls could look up to. They are the main characters of their story, they sing songs, and they add diversity to the lineup.

I would love Kida to be in the line-up since she's a princess but I know that she doesn't fit the bill because she doesn't sing any songs and she's not the main character of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I would love Esmeralda to be in the line-up but again, I know she doesn't qualify. Eilonwy isn't on the line-up because her movie did badly, she doesn't sing, and she's too young. And of course, no animals should be on the line-up. That would look weird. Princesses from sequels don't count either so that leaves out Melody, Mei, Ting Ting, and Su, etc.

I go by who Disney says is official and I'm fine with that. There is a spot for Disney Heroines on Fanpop and you can talk about Meg, Eilonwy, Esmeralda, Jane, Nala, etc.

I think they call Pocahontas "Princess" in the movie. As for Mulan, she was officially honored by the Emperor, he even bowed to her and offered her a place in his court. She married a high-ranking general in the royal army so that has to count for something. I think it's because she was offered a high position and saved China, if I was her I would have wanted to be called Princess too.

Yeah, they call Pocahontas a princess in the second movie. She calls herself a princess too. If that doesn't count, I heard that when they were making the movie Pocahontas, they were calling her a princess in the studio. *shrugs*

I have never felt that Mulan was a princess...heroin yes, royalty no...In real life Pocahontas's Father was considered a King by the English colonists so she in turn would be considered a princess...Some people consider Meg a princess because her story in Hercules is based on the greek myth of Alcestis, who is a princess in Greek mythology...I don't see why Esmeralda or Jane would be considered princesses since neither were ever royalty nor did they marry royalty and I could see Esmeralda as being a heroin but Jane just being Tarzan's love interest and I see what you are saying about Kida and Eilonwy, but maybe it is because they were not the main focus of the movies they were in....I am sorry if I did not give a very good answer, but it is my honest opinion.
