Aw don't let this deter you! You have to remember that these articles are strategically released. It's all to do with how the writers want audiences thinking/feeling before an episode airs. In this case, this article was released AFTER an episode where Elena is upset with Damon but BEFORE an episode where Stefan shows a darker side to Elena so it's kind of like Nina is supposed to be in the mindset of Elena at the same time.

But also keep in mind that this is only what Nina is projecting right now and she is not one of the writers. It's true what she says, that they are thrown together by circumstance right now but that doesn't matter - because feelings are forming during those instances. Tonight was proof! How awesome was the rain scene? ;)

Do remember that it is the first season and that Damon and Elena don't love each other yet, otherwise it would be rushed like Stefan and Elena. At the moment Elena loves Stefan and this is what it was like in the books -- Damon and Elena were built up to their love and this is what it will be like in the show. I'm glad about this because I love Delena and I am liking their development:)
Don't let this interview lose your faith because like I said, OF COURSE Elena will do anything for Stefan, but when she loves Damon, she will do the same for him. Except she will live in denial for a bit...
