Booth went to the laundry and pulled his jeans from the dryer. They were still a little damp but he knew he had better leave. Even though he loved Bones he did not know how she felt and besides she might have had too much to drink to think clearly. He wanted her to want him fully cognizant. He gathered his jacket and was slowly going towards the front door where Bones was standing. Bones wanted him to stay but did not know what to say. Usually she has no problems talking with Booth, but something kept her from asking him to stay. Instead she asked. “Where did you park your car?”
Booth: “In the downstairs garage remember you gave me the code for the gate.”
Bones: “Yes, with my extra space it is easier for you to park there than to find a place on the street.”
She kept thinking I don’t want him to leave. As they were doing this dialog the lights suddenly flickered and then all the lights in the apartment went out. She cried out. “Booth”
“Bones I’m right here.” He reached for her and pulled her closer to him. She looked around and saw through the window that all the lights in the adjoining buildings are out.
“Booth I think we had a power failure.”
“Bones I figured that. Do you have a flashlight or some candles?”
“The candles are in the kitchen. I’ll get them.” She said as she tried to make her way to the kitchen. Just as she thought she knew where she was going she hit her sore toe on the leg of a chair and she let out a cry of pain.
“Bones, what happened?”
“I hit my sore toe on a chair.”
“Let me help you.” Booth said as he moved toward the sound of her voice, but he literally walked into her and knocked her down. As she was falling she grasped for something to stop her fall but all she grabbed was Booth’s arm and pulled him down with her. They were both on the floor and could not see anything because of the blackout. Bones reached out her hands and was groping to find Booth. She finally felt his leg and as her hands maneuvered along the leg she realized his jeans were still damp.
Booth knew that Bones was nearby and he was just starting to sit up when he felt her hand on his leg. Her hands were moving up over his kneecap and along his thigh when he said. “Bones that’s my leg.”
“Booth your pants are still damp. You can’t go out in them, you will catch a cold. You need to take them off and put them back in the dryer.”
“Bones the power is out and the dryer is not going to work. Besides I only have to go down to my car parked in the garage.”
“Booth you can’t leave.”
When Booth heard this he wasn’t sure what to think. Did she really want him to stay because she felt something for him especially after that kiss?
He had to ask “Why?”
Bones hesitated and then answered. “With the power out the garage gate won’t open.”
Booth had hoped she wanted him to stay for another reason but he could not see her face in the dark otherwise he would have seen her bite her lower lip. This facial expression would have alerted him that she saying a fib. Bones was grateful for the power failure because Booth would have to stay here and she was also grateful for the dark so that he could not see her face because she lied about the garage gate. The garage gate actually has an emergency back up in case of power failure for it to open.
Booth responded with a sound of resignation in his voice. “Well if I can’t get out then I might as well stay.”
“Booth let’s get you out of your pants.”
Booth felt her hands on his leg moving upwards along his leg. “Bones I’ll do it, you need to get the candles.”
They both got up off the floor and Bones tried again to reach the kitchen for the candles. This time she was successful. Booth meanwhile removed his damp trousers and with the help from the light of the candles put them in the laundry area.
.Booth joined Bones back at the couch. She meanwhile had retrieved a throw blanket to them warm.
“Booth with the power out, we won’t have any heat so I got this blanket out.”
“Bones, good idea. We don’t know how long the power will be out so we might as well finish the champagne.” With that said he filled their glasses again.
“Booth how long do you think the power will be out?”
“Have no idea but if the weather changes we may be here for awhile.”
“I don’t know about you but I am getting sleepy maybe we should just go to bed and wait until morning.”
“Bones you go ahead you need to rest your foot and you have been working late.”
“Booth you need to get some rest to.”
“I will Bones; I’ll sleep on the couch.”
“Booth …………”
“Yes Bones.”
“Uhh , Good night.”
“Good night Bones, Happy New Year.”
Bones then walked into her bedroom and crawled into bed. She tried to go to sleep but she kept thinking about the kiss and how it made her feel. She wanted to let Booth know she had feelings for him but what if he didn’t have any for her. She could not handle being rejected. She has felt the stigma of rejection all her life since her parents disappeared.
Over the next two hours she thought back on how things have changed for her since she first met Booth. Well maybe not on their first case but on all the others they have done together. She thought about how he found her mother’s killer and how he found her father and made her have a relationship with him. She also thought about how many times she has called him stupid until Angela pointed out that he is not as stupid as he appears but that he is a genius at appearing stupid to let her be the smart one. Tears started to fill her eyes when she came to the conclusion if she does not tell him how she feels she will lose him. Even if he has no feelings for her she knew she had to admit the truth to him and so she went back into the living room.
Booth was resting on the couch breathing softly when she leaned down to wake him up.
“Booth I’ve got to tell you something.”
Booth was groggy when he asked. “What is it Bones?”
“Booth, I want to tell you …………..
“Is it Bones something to do with the case?” Booth, who had just rubbed the sleep from his eyes, looked at her face in the candlelight and saw that she had a troubled expression on her face. He stood up and put his arms around her like he has done a hundred times but something was different. He could feel her body succumbing to his embrace. He did not want to read too much into it but he had wanted her in his arms for more than just a partner’s hug. He looked into her eyes as if to read what was behind them.
“Booth I need to tell you something but I don’t know how to word it properly.”
“Bones just say what you want to say.”
“Well as you know I am a scientist and I don’t know how to change. I don’t have your heart, but I need to evolve. Remember when we were ice skating and I said everything changes but you said nothing will change between us. Something has changed.”
Booth was still holding Bones but he dreaded what she might say next.
“Bones what has changed?”
“Booth I need to tell someone I am in love with him and I don’t know how.”
Booth felt his heart start to break or as Bones would say get crushed. She is in love with Andrew and she wants me to tell her how to tell him. Booth did not say anything as he started to let her go. Bones felt his grip loosen and said. “Booth, maybe this is not the way to say it but ‘Seeley Booth I am in love with you’” Booth just looked at her not believing what he had just heard.
“Booth, say something.” Bones said with a tremor in her voice.
“Bones your right this changes everything.” Bones heard this and thought he does not love me and he will leave like everyone else has. Her eyes were starting to tear up at this prognosis.
“Because Bones I am hopelessly in love with you.” When she heard this she was ecstatic with overwhelming emotion. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. He pulled her closer and kissed her back even more ardently. When they finally could catch their breath, Bones thought for a split second and said.
“Booth you said this changes everything what do you mean?”
“Bones this means we will be more than just partners. I plan on staying with you for the next thirty or forty years.”
“Booth based on current live expectancy I believe that should be the next fifty if not sixty years.”
“Bones you always have the facts.”
“Booth, what now?”
“Bones we should get to bed now because it is very late and you are cold.”
“Booth, I’m not sleepy.”
“Bones who said anything about sleeping and did you know that two bodies together making love can generate a significant amount of heat.” Booth said with a twinkle in his eye.
“Booth I’ve heard that and as a scientist I believe we should experiment and confirm this hypothesis.” Bones smiled as she spoke.
“Sounds good to me.” He said as he lifted her into his arms and carried her into the bedroom.
Booth: “In the downstairs garage remember you gave me the code for the gate.”
Bones: “Yes, with my extra space it is easier for you to park there than to find a place on the street.”
