Brennan's parents disappeared when she was fifteen. She assumed they were dead. In the finale of the first season, they examine a skeleton from limbo, surprised to learn it is in fact Brennan's mother. They investigate her death, calling in Russ, Brennan's brother in the process. Booth discovers that Brennan's mother was not living under her real name, but an assumed identity Christine Brennan, her name was Ruth Keenan. Hodgins discovers a movie ticket of The Fugitive proving that Ruth was still alive in 1993, two years after she disappeared. This convinces Brennan that her parents did indeed abandon her. They discover her parents were part if a bank-robbing group, the reason for them living under different names. They discover that a hitman Vince McVicar, struck her mother on the head causing a subdural hematoma.Bleeding in the brain. Death would not be instantaneous, explaining why Ruth didn't die until two years after the injury. He did this because the bank-robbing crew asked him to, when Max and Ruth ran out on them. After this event, Brennan's parents can never go back to Brennan and Russ for fear of putting them in danger.
Hope this helps you to understand.
