Ch 4:
Jay knew it was a good thing that he could stay at Steve's house when he was working on the CD with Barry. He knew that staying at a friend's house was better than staying at a hotel and having to pay a hotel bill once he came back home. Jay knew what songs he wanted to put on his first CD for his fans. He was thinking of putting some of the Elvis gospel tunes that he enjoyed doing and so did Elvis when he was alive. He was thinking he could do a CD with religious Elvis tunes by themselves and one CD with the rock and roll tunes by themselves. He loved the idea!
"Aren't I clever?" Jay asked himself, giving a laugh to himself.
Jay remembered going to school in the old days and the kids used to tease him, Bill, and Karen about living so close to the White House and the kids sued to ask the three of them if they ever lived there because they lived so close to the historical landmark. Jay knew it wasn't true but he and Karen lived in an apartment building they grew up in that was eight or twelve blocks to the historical White House but they never lived in the White House. Now he, Karen, and Bill are grown up and have their own families, they don't hear that joke anymore.
Jay couldn't wait to go back to his hometown to record his music. After getting off with Steve, he got another phone call and it was Bill this time.
"Hi, Jay. What's this newspaper article doing in the front page? It's talking about your sister solving some cold case. Is this whole story true or make - believe?" Bill asked.
"It's true. Steve just asked me about that. When she solves a case like that one about the deputy sheriff, it goes in the paper, so yeah it's true," Jay said.
"Who is this Jeremy Cline? Do you know anything about him?" Bill asked him.
"He was her boss, Bill. He's not sheriff anymore. Karen said it's because he worked until he got sick with severe depression. He's home full - time," Jay said.
"That's too bad. Does he need help?" Bill asked. "She says a friend of hers is taking care of him and the family. He works as a mechanic at some garage and cares for them at night and weekends. She says he's very religious," Jay said.
Bill didn't say anything when Jay mentioned religion because he knew he himself wasn't religious.
"Do you think you'll go on tour for this CD you're going to record with Manilow?" Bill asked.
"I don't know. I haven't heard anything about that from Paul yet. I guess they're still working things out," Jay said.
"If you do, then this will be your first tour. Maybe you'll get discovered while working on your CD. You may never tell," Bill said.
"That will be something, won't it? I never really thought of that," Jay said.
"Neither did I until now. Did I mention I'm working on another murder right now?" Bill asked.
"Another one? You're really something, Bill. I guess that Lynda Conway series of yours must be hot right now," Jay said.
"They are. I can't stop. I'm not stopping until I die," Bill said.
"Good luck."
"Thanks, bosom buddy," Bill said and the two laughed.
"What is this newest book of yours titled this time?" Jay asked, getting interested in his friend's writing. "It's called The Tea Time Fashion Murders. This time Lynda is in London, England. I don't have her travel often, but she is in this book. I recently started it so I haven't gotten far," Bill said.
"Wow. No wonder you're so popular," Jay said, surprised at the number his best friend gave him.
"It sure surprises me too. I've got to go. My break from the book is over. Speaking of breaks, I have to pick up Ken from school. The bell should be ringing soon," Bill said.
"Okay. Chat later," Jay said.
"Marlene will be home before I am. She's out on a date. She's enjoying her new teenage friends."
"That's no surprise. She lives in your attic, don't forget," Jay reminded him.
"I know she does. Today she is out with Dwight and Jim."
"How old are those two?" Jay asked.
"Sixteen and fourteen. Go figure," Bill said.
"Too young. I'll pass, thanks," Jay said.
"That's Marlene for you," Bill said and the two got off.
