Ch 3:
Later that week, Jay had gotten a letter from Steve Griswold, a friend of his from Las Vegas, Nevada in the mail. He remembered the first time they had met in Vegas. He knew it wasn't a happy ending. He had sued Steve Griswold for two million dollars in court because Steve had wanted him to put on his own television show when he was on contract with his own Elvis Presley shows he was busy with and his contract said no TV and Steve didn't know anything about that. Later, when he and Steve had gotten to know each other better, he and Steve had ripped the restraining order they had gotten in court and now they are getting along just fine and hadn't had an argument since their two million dollar court argument. He opened the envelope and read Steve's two page letter. Jay knew he had to tell Steve about his going out to Vegas and making his own CD with Barry. He wanted to ask Steve if he could stay at Steve's place while he was out in Vegas while working on this CD with Barry Manilow. He hoped Steve wouldn't mind letting him stay at his apartment while he was working on the CD.
The telephone rang at the house just then and Jay answered it.
"McCarey residence," Jay said on the telephone.
"Hi, Jay," he heard Steve's voice say.
"Hi, Steve. I just read your letter," Jay said.
"I thought it would come on this day and you would read it at some point. Does anybody miss me?" Steve asked.
"Marlene does," Jay said.
"I figured that. What about everyone else?" Steve asked.
"Sure we do. Marlene especially," he said.
"I figured she would miss me the most," Steve said.
"I remember you two were close," he said.
"Yup, we are. I chatted with her on facebook the other day," Steve said.
"You did? I have some news for you," Jay said.
"What's that?" Steve asked.
"Remember the days when I was an Elvis Presley impersonator?" Jay asked.
"Yeah. What about it?" Steve asked.
"I'm coming back to Vegas," Jay said.
"You mean moving?" Steve asked.
"No. I'm coming back to work," Jay said.
"What for?" Steve asked.
"I'm going to be doing something I've never done with my Elvis career, Steve. My manager, Paul, thought it was a good idea that I come out and get started on this missing part of the career," Jay said.
"What is this missing part you have to do?" Steve asked.
"I have to record CDs. That's what Paul wants me to do for my fans that came to my shows. He thought it was a good idea I record CDs so that way they wouldn't miss me since I don't perform Elvis anymore," Jay said.
"That is a good idea. What's your first CD going to be?" Steve asked.
"It's going to be with Barry Manilow, since we're friends after all," Jay said.
"Interesting. What songs do you two have in mind for this album?" Steve asked.
"I don't know. We'll work on it," Jay said.
One thing Jay didn't know about working on CDs is that you have to spend so many hours in the recording studio working on songs and CDs. He wouldn't know that until he started working on this CD.
"Jay, I saw in the newspaper on the front page about Karen solving a twelve - year - old cold case murder about a deputy sheriff. Is that story true? It was in the front page," Steve said.
"Yeah, it's true. That's my sister for you, Steve. She's a pretty good cop too," Jay said.
"Does she want it so she could keep it for memories?" Steve asked.
"I think she already has a copy," Jay said.
"Okay. If she wants it if she already doesn't have a copy, I'd be happy to ship it from Vegas," Steve said.
"Thanks," Jay said, "Steve, I think she might already have it. I'll ask her anyway. I do have a question for you."
"What's that?" Steve asked.
"I wanted to know if I could stay at your apartment while I'm working on this CD," Jay said.
"Sure. Why not? Better than staying at a hotel, you know. When do you come to Vegas?" Steve asked.
"I don't know yet. We haven't worked out the dates yet. I'll keep you posted," Jay said.
"Okay. I'd like to know when you're coming out so I can get your room ready."
"No problem. I sure will keep you posted. I've got to go so I can go on my daily two hour run," Jay said.
"Okay. Nice talking with you," Steve said.
"Bye," Jay said.
"Bye," Steve returned and they hung up.
