This article was created for the honor of my newest addiction- Anime! I like to write this article in honor of the first anniversary of my Anime-watching experience. This year has been the biggest for my new beginnings and I have a feeling the New Year and onward will bring more and more excitement for me as it would for all of you! :D Thank you for reading this article and hope you all have a wonderful New Year!
2005- The Beginning, Anime Introduction, and The Time When Anime Was Too…Small
As some of you may know, I never became addicted to Anime before. The reason as to why I never became a fan of it is explained, but you will have to go below to find the explanation. The first Anime I watched was “Pokemon”, which dates back to 1999- a year after its huge appearance. I know that it’s considered to be linked to the Anime category and sometimes it is, but it appeals to being more of a cartoon-link to me than it would be in the Anime group. It was in fact the first Japanese-made cartoon I’ve ever watched.
But moving to several years later, another Anime show drew my attention. A lot of you know it was “Tokyo Mew Mew”, but for those who are into English versions of these shows like me than you might also remember it as “Mew Mew Power”. It became the second Anime series I watched and I liked it- although I could “never” quite watch it due to it being broadcast on cable every Saturday morning and I would just not hesitate to get up and watch it. With that being said, I never got to watch it but a few years later I finally did, but that’s not important right now. Later during the year, another Anime classic drew my interest. The top series best known by fans everywhere: “Sailor Moon”. I know you might be thinking, “How could you be interested in this one when it was made WAY back in the day?” The honest truth is that I was interested but it took enough research to learn and like it. Like Tokyo Mew Mew, I too never got the chance to experience the actual show until I discovered websites in which the episodes could be watched. It’s hard to find classics like these sometimes, but it can be worth it if you’re really that desperate to experience something like a show that was popular back in the 90’s (I was a 90’s kid, but sadly this one never came into my path…). And thanks to the web, I also found all of the English episodes to Tokyo Mew Mew and it became the joyish moment for me when I finally got the opportunity to experience this amazing series.
Both of these shows were introduced to me in 2005 and it was this year that started it all. I know you’re thinking that Tokyo Mew Mew, and Sailor Moon aren’t enough to call me an “Anime Fan”, but that’s only the beginning. We then move onto 2006- once again a big year of Anime introductions. I was first introduced to this Anime series called “Galaxy Angel”, a very random, comedic series that tells about this group of girls from space and who are in search for a mysterious object. This series got my attention pretty much the same as Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew did. Unlike those shows however, I was actually introduced to it by a friend who is also a big fan of Anime. This friend was also the one who got me into Tokyo Mew Mew, so sorry if I left that out. Anyway, Galaxy Angel became another show that was in my head and my interest for a good while. Like the others, I never got the chance to see it either. Between you and me, I was actually scared and afraid to go near them. You may be thinking that I was a coward or a scardey cat for not approaching this stuff but I had very good reasons why I didn’t. You see, I was fifteen years old when I got introduced to this show: Even though they were interesting to look at and do research on, I was just too young to watch them. Plus, my mother wouldn’t know what to say if she found out I was browsing through Anime things (But of course she knew because I used to store a lot of pictures from all of these shows onto my computer and she would find them and get mad at me.) I guess you could say that it was very hard to admit that I had interest in something else that wasn’t really appealing to my mom, but what could I have done? I’m not really the one to argue with her. I was just being a good son.
Anyhow, getting back to the story- Galaxy Angel was the third series to cross my path, even though I only got to see a little bit of it. Shortly after this, another Anime came into my way. “Ojamajo Doremi” or as English speaking countries name it ‘Magical DoReMi”. This show crossed my mind mainly due to its characters as well as the plot. I mean, how could you not like a series with cute, little girls as witchlings? Especially a real witch who is turned into a green blob after the main character calls her a witch? Lol! It was so fun to watch, even though it is for little kids. No matter what gender it’s on, I always love a good series. The stories and plots can be as imaginative as they can also be unexpecting. It’s like something you may or may not have discovered but really want to. The Anime world is filled with magic, adventure, and of course action!
Well, seeing as if we have gotten passed most of the series, we move onto the next year- 2007. This year has to be one of my most memorable years ever and for a good reason. This was the year when I was introduced to possibly the cutest, greatest, and most spectacular series of all time- “Cardcaptors”, or as other people like to call it, “Cardcaptor Sakura”. So you’re thinking, “What’s the big deal about this show? Why is it so important to you?” The reason is because it was a big deal and it was important to me. This show had so many great reasons to be adored. It had great characters, great story and plot, awesome magical moments and filled with action, and had such funny humor even I could crack a smile or a chuckle and two. I’ve always ranked this Anime as #1 on my top list and it will always stay that way. <3 Cardcaptors forever!!!
2012: A New Legacy, Anime Becomes Official, The Start of an Adventurer’s Dream
Four years is a long time for being interested the same things you like. Sense the introduction of Cardcaptors in 2007, no other Animes came into my mind. It was pretty much the same life as always until something happened- something that would change me and would impact me for the next year and future generations to come.
You may be thinking that Cardcaptors was the last Anime series I would ever be interested in. Truth is I thought it was going to be the last one too. But that wasn’t going to stop me, for four years later I would do something that was unspeakable. It was around close to the holiday season of 2011 and I did something that I haven’t done maybe for long time- I was doing Anime research again. This time however, it was more than just simple research. I was actually deciding whether if getting into new series was worth it or if it was a big mistake. I was actually old enough, I was 20 during the time, and so what was the harm in being introduced to the “real” world of Anime? After doing tons of research in just one whole month, I finally made the decision of venturing into the world of Anime like I’ve never done before! After the holidays were done and with New Years passing by, my dream finally came true- I was devoting myself to watching series after series and becoming what I am today- an Anime Fan!
You’re probably wondering by now, “How many series have you watched this year?” “Have you watched any of the shows I like?” Answer to both questions is as simple as they can be. Sense the start of 2012, I have watched over 13 different series. I started off with a cute series named “Sister Princess” and proceeded. The series that are well known that I can reveal are as follows: “Lucky Star”, “Shuffle!”, “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”, “K-ON!”, “Fruits Basket”, “Negima!?”, “Baka and Test”, “Chobits”, “Azumanga Daioh”, and “Ouran High School Host Club”. That’s a lot of well-known series! Surprised I have seen any of these ones you might know? This list only covers the “popular” or “well known” series to the Anime community. The others that I have experienced are “Kodocha”, “Galaxy Angel”, and “Pani Poni Dash”.
It’s true that 13 series is plenty enough to end 2012, but many of you are thinking, “What’s next?” “What new series are you going to get yourself into?” “Will you see any other Animes I like?” These questions are kind of hard to answer because the truth is- I am not sure. :P There is no telling what surprises will come beginning the New Year. Although it’s hard to answer, I can tell you that the main highlights for the series that I am planning on watching next year are as follows: “School Rumble”, “Inuyasha”, “Sgt Frog”, “Excel Saga”, “Aria, the Scarlet Ammo”, “Rozen Maiden”, “Soul Eater”, “My Bride is a Mermaid”, “Is This a Zombie?” And so much more! This is just only half of what is planned, but you’ll have to wait until next year to find out which series is going to be on my watch list. Whatever choices I make and whichever series I watch, chances are: It’ll be wicked awesome!!! XD
To conclude this article, I have to say that the many years of getting to this moment have been the hardest times of my life. It’s finally great to know that my mom has understood my interest with the world of Japanese animation and is still supporting me to watch more. Thanks to my mom for being so generous!
Until next year, wait and find out which series I have been watching through 2013 and hope to see which series are on my waiting and must-watch list! This is AnimeFan66 signing off! Have a Happy New Year to you all out there and hope your resolutions come true! :D
