An interesting question. For one, I won't choose, because I don't normally go for one, or the other, however, if I was going to choose, i would go for yuri, as I can't imagine enjoying yaoi all that much, given that I'm not interested in seeing two guys make out, even if they are animated. Another question is, are yuri and yaoi sustained in anime? Do people enjoy them and should they be there? I don't really care, but I think that might end up being an interesting topic to debate about as well.
Me being a teenage girl, I actually thought that I would like yaoi. But I'm not into either. I don't mind seeing yuri or yaoi at all (I even like them *sometimes*), I'm just not an actual big fan of both. Heck, I don't even ship 'straight' couples, since I'm not the kind of person who ships at all. XD
@blackpanther Thank you. Understandable. To answer your question; I personally enjoy it, it shows that love comes in all forms and isn't restricted to same sex couples. And people who are homosexual can relate to it. And on top of this it opens the mind to new ideas.
@candy That's actually the first time I've heard someone not shipping anything. INtresting view point. Me, I ship everyone with everyone and everything so lol.
@animetrolly I'm a female and I actually shoot for both lol.
I have no problem with either necessarily, but mainly when they're tastefully done. I chose yuri because... well, let's face it, there's far less of an "ick" factor for me. No problem with people doing it, just not the kind of thing I want to be seeing in my anime.
@zanhar1 I agree with how homosexual people can relate to it, and I also like that it shows love of all forms (I support gay rights). Though a lot of times, yaoi and yuri are often used as "fan service" for heterosexuals (think of how girls like yaoi, and men like yuri). Though that's a common stereotype, it's still true for many.
And yes, I'm just not a shipper, I tend to go with whatever's canon.
@candyfornia I am also a supporter of gay/bi/trans/asexual rights. The fanservice as I bought up in my response to whiteflame is where I draw the line...the ick factor. Oh I know those stereotypes I think I broke it with me being a woman who prefers yuri. And I don't care for the fanservice. Me I multi-ship mostly non-canon actually.
@Zanhar. I quite agree with Flame's point about it being tasteful... I certainly wouldn't object to that, though I probably still wouldn't watch it. And, yeah, I know... They were mostly hypothetical questions for what would be asked in that particular topic. I think it's fine to have it, but, like I said, I agree with Whiteflame.
While I don't really pay attention to either genre as much, I find the way yaoi is often portrayed (not in a nsfw way) in anime fascinates me. I guess it's the 'strong bonds between manly men' thing that I find interesting. It's hard to explain. xD
Will do. Probably not right now, but in the next couple of days. By the way, please utilise the forum that I made for people to add topics we could debate. Thanks!
I'm not that into either. Though as long as it's not porn related or anything, I don't mind seeing it now and then in anime. I also appreciate the fact that it has gotten so many people more open to Gay Rights. Though, here's the really bizarre thing, Yaoi and Yuri fans who are homophobic.....>.< I've seen it a few times before on the Anime club actually. I have not the slightest idea how you could be a fan of the very something you are against~ But in a way, I suppose it could be somewhat like supporting something such as murder in anime but never in real life.
The thought of it makes me sick. I mean it's really really weird! I mean it really bothers me to see Yaoi or Yuri especially when I ship many girl x boy couple. I really don't understand how people can like Yuri or Yaoi though there are only some cute pics of Yuri.
Yuzuri: I also ship many hetero couples but that doesn't mean you can't like Yaoi or Yuri. And just because you ship a homosexual couple doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to find fan art. I personally don't get any fan arts of Yaoi or Yuri.
I don't care, love is love and a pair is a pair. I just ship more Yaoi then Yuri because find more to ship, I don't just randomly make up pairings. So I don't prefer one over the other, I just ship certain pairs more then others.
@Yuzuri I too ship hetero couples but I don't find boy/boy or girl/girl parings to be sick or weird. Love is love and love is natural. It comes in all forms.
Dewheart: and I am a girl, now that we hve cleared that up. I don't like like watching any of their genres. Because 99% of the time it is just sex. Which I hate how they stereotype homosexual relationship with. Reason I don't call myself a Yaoi or Yuri fan, because this fandoms focus on the sexual part more.
Not all of them focus on sex; there's two types of yuri/yaoi soft yuri/yaoi (which is the more cute kisses and cuddles less sex) and then there's hard yuri/yaoi (which is the more sex related one). And not all of the fandom likes it for the sex. I hate the sex parts in fact.
zanhar1: Of course not all, but most do. You look around websites and talk to different fans, you see they mostly care how 'hot' it is. One of the reasons you see a lot of Yaoi fangirls whining about how 'gross' Yuri is. Because it's not 'hot' like Yaoi. A lot of them only care how much doujinshi the pair has or how much sex is in the OVA. But didn't you say yourself you ship for looks?
The only Yaoi OVA I have found without sex is Tight Rope. And the top comments on that video were people whining about it not having a sex scene. It and Sekai ichi Hatsukoi are the only Shounen Ai series I like. Yuri, haven't found one show with it that I like, most of them are either all about sex or boring.
Emo: Yeah, Shounen Ai and Shoujo Ai, I call myself a fan of that. I'm not a Yaoi or Yuri fan.
@EmoSasu Thanks for specifying. I've only seen it called hard and soft. ^_^
@Pumpkin That seems more likely. I don't really go on many websites other than fanpop, tumblr, and YouTube. I don't see it too much on Fanpop. Don't really look at comments on YouTube. Tumblr is the place I see that happening the most, but Tumblr users typically discuss how hot they think all characters are, not just Yuri and Yaoi. But it isn't to far fetched to say it happens on other anime fansites.
I don't recall saying I shipped anything for looks. And I definitely don't ship it for the sex, sex just does not appeal to my asexual arse whatsoever. But I did say I ship basically anything.
I love Yaoi! I can't really properly describe how much I enjoy it! It's one of my favorite things about anime! No matter if it's a real or a fan-created pairing.
As for Yuri mmm I don't have anything against it but to be honest I don't really enjoy it hehe Maybe because I am a girl. Don't really know if that is a valid argument LOL!
zanhar: Actually the Yaoi club on here is bad for stereotyping the relationships and focusing on the sex. Every poll on there is pretty much asking something sexual. And the Hetalia fandom, dear god...bunch of nut job Yaoi fan girls everywhere shipping for looks and doujinshi. I almost strangled someone for saying "I don't really like them, they don't have any doujinshi" to a pairing that is so historically accurate it's not even funny.
I maybe wrong, but I remember you saying you usually like them for looks.
Lisseth: I'm a girl too, and I ship anything that makes sense. Weigher it's homosexual or heterosexual.
I don't really go on the yoai or the Hetalia spots much which is probably why I haven't seen it. I was referring more to the anime spot. But as I said I don't see it as far fetched that a good number do like it for the sex.
You may be thinking of someone else or misinterpreted something I said because I never base anything on looks (I find it quite shallow), I'm the one who gets annoyed when people do that. I ship couples usually because my favorite character is involved with the pairing. I ship some things for comedy yes but never for looks.
i'd rather watch a couple that had two girls in it in an anime than one with two guys, so yeah, i'd prefer watching yuri. don't consider one intrinsically better than the other. don't want to watch yaoi, but i don't mind when it's "suggestive" of yaoi (am enjoying Devil and Realist quite a bit) or "about" yaoi fandom (like Genshiken).
I like both and have nothing against either one if it is done in good taste. But I guess I prefer Yaoi a little bit more. And I like the ones that portray a deep bond and deep characters rather than the actual sexual parts. LIke the No. 6 anime, their relationship wasn't all there was to that anime and it was more about the deep personalities of each of them than anything. And I guess I haven't seen a yuri that portrays that yet, a deep emotional bond.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many peeps have answered 0_0 Totes
Haha Sexual questions seem to strike more activity mayhaps- thus- perhaps that answers BP's question on should they be in anime/or an anime genre...etc. I think a lot of people like them, whether gay or not, and gay & bi too..& fond it more stimualting or entertaining...
For me personally: Neither.
{like CaliforniaGurl~ I don't "ship" either, even straight couples, but that does not mean I don't think it is good to have something for everyone.}
Yaoi & Yuri should not be considered the same thing as Hentai. Even the ecchi stuff or when there is more to a story as far as romance or more than kissing, even sexual/sex & such as some general fanservices- NOT hentai in the true on-Western definition. There should be animes for younger and older audiences in my opinion. Someone who has more delivcate sensibilities knows their limit and is made completely uncomfortable by things over the line for them and should not have to be subjected, but I am on the other end and do not like being babied at all. I crave a deeper story, and I want more as far as relationships as well. I like realistic emotions, too.
Something that annoys the crap of me though is when a girl thinks that all females love Yaoi. @__@
Noooooooooooooo. Usually it is a young girl. & even if I was younger or their age, it still would not be something I would like or my cuppa tea. Everyone is different. I don't think things should be stolidly one way or another or thought or spoken as such in any events, including anime.
..also, a side thingie: the fan-girls/boys of Yaoi & Yuri -those that I think say "it's so cute" a lot ~ sometimes seem to revel at a sustained level of only huggie-kissy, no more, and I am sure there are reasons for those that feel that way, but it is totally UNrealistic to expect that for ANY couple to forever stay at only cute blushy moments. That is very Peter Pan, and then they have seemed offended (from what I have seen & heard at times) that they would DARE do or show more. Well~

@whiteflame thank you
@Cerudays Manly bonds are just a special kind of amazing. :P
People say it's disgusting but I mean look at the Yaoi fan art sometime XDD
@blackpanther will do.

I have nothing against Shōjo-Ai whatsoever.
I love yaoi, I love anime boys.
that's all. xD
