I'm refering to "Because they are people too" part of the banner. I think it should be changed. Animals are not people, and they don't need to be people to have rights.
No, it is completely and utterly right. Humans have got to stop thinking that they are apart and above the animal kingdom. Animals are no less valuble than humans.
^ We are "apart and above the animal kingdom." We are, for the most part, top of the food chain. We are the most intelligent (and, arguably, also the stupidest), and we basically do control the world. Other animals are not yet at our level, so they are not considered humans. They cannot think and consider like we can, cannot understand and learn in the same way.
not really because if you see a movie with aliens for example avatar they refer to their population as their "people" so I think the term could be applied to animals as well. I think It is also extremely arrogant to think we are better than them and we have far to high an opinion of ourselves. If you took away the gun we would no longer be at the top of the food chain.
"Person" is a synonym for "human", and "human" is only one species of animal; not all animals are of the human species, and nor do they need to be to have rights. In the sci-fi world "person" can refer to dominant race of a planet. But that also contradicts the point of animal rights - we humans have dominated the world and that's why we're now working on giving the rest of the animal kingdom the rights they deserve.
So it's not the end of the world. It's just contradictory.
I wouldn't like to say it's offensive to humans, or to other animals though, because that just seems speciesist.
If they were people our world would be terrible :P As animals they have an innocence people will never have. But the slogan doesn't really bother me. I know what is meant, it's just wrongly expressed.
In short, animals are not people.
